Brains At Risk          Presenter: Jeanine Fitzgerald                       Thursday, January 28, 2010

The brain reshapes itself as a result of experiences: therefore, the experiences young brains are exposed to matter. While we are not neuroscientists, we are members of the only profession whose job is to change the brain every day. So, the more we know about it, the more successful we can be. This session will look at how brains of today’s children have changed from those in the past. It provides a balance of research and theory with techniques and tips for using this information on brain-compatible learning in environments that serve children prenatally through adolescence. We begin with basic brain facts and structures and progress to in-depth discovery of subjects such as school readiness, attention, emotions, memory, motivation and enrichment.  Qualifies for Advanced Specialized Care/Protective Service Hours.  Location: Essex Alliance Church

Nobody Left to Hate      Presenter: Jeanine Fitzgerald                   Friday, February 19, 2010

We are on the verge of major change. We are about to receive a stimulus package for our social economy! This session will cover the bright and dark sides of social intelligence. Two broad categories will be explored: social awareness and social skills. Social awareness refers to what we sense about others including empathy, attunement and social cognition. Social skills are what we use to influence and shape the outcomes of relationships and interactions. Social skills include the work of play, conflict resolution, understanding social cues and feedback and pro-social behaviors.  Qualifies for Advanced Specialized Care/Protective Service Hours.  Location: Williston Federated Church.

Islands of Happiness      Presenter: Jeanine Fitzgerald                          Saturday,  March 13, 2010

Humor unleashes the mind. It is a complex dynamic with many sources that is essential to sanity and survival. Humor is mental flexibility that can heal loneliness and depression. It is the foundation of positive social interaction. Research says that children laugh an average of 200 times per day, and adults an average of 17. Ten minutes of belly laughter a day can be a factor in recovering from illness, enhance breathing, increase the immune system and keep us from being described as “being weaned on a pickle.” This session will explore humor and playfulness, and other topics that create islands of happiness, for children and adults.

Qualifies for Advanced Specialized Care/Protective Service Hours.

Reframing Behavior Management     Presenter: Jeanine Fitzgerald          Saturday, May 8, 2010

Today, our focus regarding behavior appears to be aligned with managing it for the sake of achieving instruction and meeting the needs and conveniences of adults. However, discipline has always been intended to support the needs of children to learn self-regulation and self-control. Learning these includes the child, the child’s parents, the child’s teacher or childcare provider and the environment. While we are not solely responsible for the child’s behavior, we are responsible for our approach to these behaviors and the climate we create. This session will examine definitions and types of discipline, the characteristics of effective and ineffective techniques, so each participant can develop approaches to discipline that give children “the basics” to live successfully in an increasingly complex world.  Qualifies for Advanced Specialized Care/Protective Service Hours.  Location: Williston Federated Church.
